Our Toffee Making History
In 1936, Helen Unger began making English Toffee in her Home Economics class at J. Sterling Morton High School in Cicero, Illinois. She shared her toffee with family and friends during the holiday season. People began placing orders for this fantastic candy, and she was in business.
Even through the war years when supplies were hard to get, the commitment to quality ingredients did not stop.
In 1982, Helen's daughter Joan and her husband Dave Pszonka took over the family toffee-making tradition. With the whole family taking part in the making of this outstanding confection, the business flourished. Soon, the family room was converted into a commercial kitchen to ensure food safety compliance.
In 2021, Joan and Dave’s daughter Brenda took over the business. She continues to use the same recipe and quality ingredients and creates always incredible toffee. She also likes to experiment, and has introduced dark chocolate toffee to our menu. There’s usually some form of a toffee experiment, many of them make it to the sample jar. The toffee shop is her happy place, and her kids help out in the shop when needed. The family tradition continues!
